Best Places to Buy Basic Attention Token (BAT) in the UK

1. Coinbase

Coinbase‘s Advanced dashboard is a cheap way that you can buy Basic Attention Token (BAT) in the UK. It’s also one of the best cryptocurrency exchanges around and is now listed on the NASDAQ (ticker: COIN).

This cryptocurrency exchange allows you to deposit GBP with a UK bank transfer (via Faster Payments). After my initial transfer, I’ve found that GBP deposits are credited to Coinbase within just minutes after being sent.

Unfortunately, you can’t buy Basic Attention Token (BAT) directly with GBP through Coinbase’s Advanced interface. This means that you’ll have to exchange your GBP for another cryptocurrency before you can buy Basic Attention Token (BAT).

You’ll pay a maximum of 0.6% in fees when using Coinbase’s Advanced dashboard and get access to the REAL exchange rate (i.e., no hidden fees). However, you’ll need to convert your GBP into a cryptoasset that can be exchanged for BAT.

The best option here is to use USD Coin (USDC), as you’ll pay a maximum of 0.001% in fees to buy it with GBP using Coinbase’s Advanced interface. You can then use this to buy Basic Attention Token (BAT).

2. CoinJar

CoinJar is another place where you can buy Basic Attention Token (BAT) with a UK bank transfer.

Like Coinbase, CoinJar supports UK Faster Payments. This means that, after your initial deposit, any money you send should be credited to your account within just minutes.

You’ll be charged a 1% fixed fee when you buy any cryptocurrency on CoinJar. The exchange rate you’re offered is the best possible rate on the CoinJar Exchange, but this can sometimes be higher than in other places (but when I’ve checked, not by much).

This might be more expensive than using a cryptocurrency exchange, but it is much easier to use (making it a more appropriate choice for beginners).

With the app, you can buy Basic Attention Token (BAT) in the UK with a UK bank transfer, credit card, or debit card.

Buying Basic Attention Token (BAT) with a UK bank transfer is your cheapest option, as you’ll be charged nothing to deposit GBP into your account or to make a purchase. In contrast, you’ll be charged 2.99% in fees to buy Basic Attention Token (BAT) with a credit or debit card.

Unfortunately, the exchange rate that you’re quoted in the app isn’t great. I’ve consistently been quoted prices for Basic Attention Token (BAT) and other cryptocurrencies which are more than 1% higher than they should be. This sucks.

You can do much more in the app than just buy and sell cryptocurrencies like Basic Attention Token (BAT) though. Amongst other things, their Visa Card is one of the best cryptocurrency debit cards around.

What is Basic Attention Token (BAT)?

The Brave ecosystem is an attempt at revolutionising how we browse the internet by changing how publishers, advertisers, and internet users interact. Its primary feature is the Brave Browser, which uses Basic Attention Token (BAT) as a way of engaging users of the internet.

The Brave ecosystem and Basic Attention Token (BAT) were officially launched in 2017 by Brian Bondy and Brendan Eich, two experienced software developers. In fact, Eich is the brain behind Javascript and he was also the founder of Mozilla – so he knows a thing or two about internet browsing.

The idea behind Basic Attention Token (BAT) is that internet users who surf the web on Brave can earn BAT for viewing advertisements. You can then hold onto your BAT in a personal wallet or you can use some of it to tip your favourite websites and content creators.

Basic Attention Token (BAT) is an ERC-20 token and it has a maximum supply of 1.5 billion. When the tokens were minted, approximately 1 billion were sold to investors, 200 million were kept for ecosystem development, and 300 million were placed in a user growth pool to attract users to the platform.

Here’s a look at how Basic Attention Token (BAT) operates within the greater Brave ecosystem:

What are the benefits of holding Basic Attention Token (BAT)?

Basic Attention Token (BAT) is a utility token, so most of the benefits of holding it revolve around interactions within the Brave ecosystem.

The Brave ecosystem turns the traditional advertising model on its head by paying internet users for viewing ads. You can then use Basic Attention Token (BAT) to reward websites and content creators – so they can continue to make good content for you to enjoy in the future.

However, Basic Attention Token (BAT) can have value outside of the Brave ecosystem. The token is available for trading on a large number of popular exchanges. Some investors think that it could be a good long-term store of value, especially if Brave Browser becomes more widely adopted in the future.

Since Basic Attention Token (BAT) is also an ERC-20 token, it has some uses on popular decentralised finance (DeFi) applications. For instance, some DeFi platforms let you use BAT as collateral to get loans or to receive interest, too.

But, more than anything else, the benefits of holding BAT come from the Brave ecosystem. As the Brave ecosystem grows to include things like a DEX aggregator, a decentralised web platform, and its own payment system, BAT could be more functional for internet users everywhere.

What is Brave?

Brave is a privacy-focused internet browser that forms the core of the Brave ecosystem. It’s built on Chromium, which is an open-source browser project that is also the basis for Google Chrome.

The Brave Browser is available for iOS, Android, Mac, Windows, and Linux. In many ways, surfing the web on Brave Browser looks and feels a lot like surfing the web on Google Chrome, but with some notable differences.

The idea behind Brave is that it makes your internet browsing experience faster and more convenient without sacrificing your privacy. It claims to offer browsing that’s 3 to 6 times faster than what you’d get on Chrome or Firefox.

This is all possible because Brave comes with a built-in ad blocker and “privacy shields” that stops websites from loading advertisements or tracking your activity.

All of these trackers and advertisements can use up a lot of bandwidth and slow down your webpage loading speed. Eliminating these trackers and ads can make your browsing experience that much more efficient.

I’ve used Brave Browser on my laptop and smartphone for months and I’ve been thoroughly impressed by what I’ve seen. Ad-filled sites that used to slow down my computer and take forever to load now open super quickly. I also no longer have to deal with a constant stream of annoying pop-up video advertisements when I’m reading articles.

That said, Brave Browser is still a relatively new browser, so we’ll have to wait and see how well it catches on over time.

Brave Browser & Basic Attention Token (BAT)

The creators behind Brave know that simply eliminating ads and trackers isn’t a long-term solution. Many websites and content creators rely on advertising revenues to continue operations.

That’s where Basic Attention Token (BAT) comes into the picture.

Advertising is a critical part of the Brave ecosystem. But instead of seeing on-page ads, with Brave Browser, advertisements occasionally pop up on the side of your screen like a notification. You can choose how often you see these advertisements per hour, too, so you can all but eliminate them if you don’t want the distraction.

Any organization that wants to advertise with Brave can join the ecosystem’s ad network. There are more than 400 advertisers in the network, including some big-name companies, but most are currently crypto-related services. These advertisers then pay to have their ads pop up on Brave browsers across the globe.

In exchange for viewing these advertisements, Brave rewards you for your attention with Basic Attention Token (BAT). Brave says that users earn 70% of the ad revenue that the ecosystem generates through BAT rewards. The amount that you can earn varies based on your internet usage, but some users report earning as much as 10 to 15 BAT per month.

Your Basic Attention Tokens (BAT) are then paid out to you once a month to your connected wallet. BAT currently supports direct transfers to Gemini and Uphold.

You can also use your BAT balance to tip and reward content creators for their efforts. You can set up a one-time payment or a recurring tip to support your favourite websites and social channels.

Meanwhile, content creators can register their websites and social channels to receive BAT payments. If a website that you tip isn’t registered with Brave, any unclaimed tips that you send will be returned to your wallet after 90 days.

Best BAT Wallets

Basic Attention Token (BAT) is an ERC-20 token, so it’s easy to store on a wide range of wallets. There is no official non-custodial Brave wallet, but you can opt to leave your BAT on the wallet that’s provided for you when you sign up for Brave rewards.

If you want more control over your private keys, you can transfer your BAT to any non-custodial wallet that supports ERC-20 tokens. However, to remove your BAT from your Brave rewards account, you first need to transfer it to either Uphold or Gemini.

Once your Basic Attention Token (BAT) is in your Uphold or Gemini account, you can transfer it to many other ERC-20 compatible wallets. Some of the most popular software wallets include:

  • Atomic Wallet: This is one of my favourite multi-asset wallets. With Atomic Wallet, you can manage your ERC-20 tokens and dozens of other major coins in a sleek, user-friendly mobile app. Atomic Wallet also supports staking and in-wallet crypto purchases.
  • Trust Wallet: Developed by the team at Binance, Trust Wallet is a popular non-custodial hot wallet that’s available as a mobile app. Trust Wallet supports most major crypto networks, all ERC-20 tokens, and both BEP-2 and BEP-20 tokens. It has a built-in DEX, too, support for DApps, and a feature that lets you buy crypto using a credit card.
  • MetaMask: A popular mobile app and Chrome extension-based wallet, MetaMask is a solid choice for managing Ethereum-based tokens, including BAT. The MetaMask extension is compatible with the Brave Browser, too, so you can use it while earning BAT.

If you prefer a hardware wallet for storing your private keys, the Ledger Nano X and Nano S are popular choices for managing Basic Attention Token (BAT).

Both are fully compatible with all ERC-20 tokens and BAT is supported by Ledger Live (the Ledger wallet interface). You can also connect your Ledger device with either MyEtherWallet or MyCrypto to manage your tokens.

Other popular hardware wallets for storing Basic Attention Token (BAT) include the Trezor One and the Trezor Model T. Both wallets support all ERC-20 tokens. BAT is also compatible with Trezor Suite, so you can manage your tokens directly from your Trezor wallet interface.
